“I love dentistry. I love everything about it from interacting with people to doing small intricate procedures. I’m a perfectionist and dentistry is my outlet for that.” – Dr. Rima Shaer
Dr. Rima is of Lebanese heritage and was born in Liberia. When she was six months old, her family relocated to Beaverton, Oregon. Dr. Rima attended Beaverton High School and graduated from Portland State University with a major in organismal biology. Following her undergraduate studies, Dr. Rima attended Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) School of Dentistry and in 2008, she earned a degree as a doctor of dental medicine. She graduated at the top of her class with high clinical and academic honors and was awarded the Oregon Academy of General Dentistry Senior Dental Student Award. After graduation, she was invited to teach as an assistant professor at OHSU. Dr. Rima is fluent in English, Arabic, and Spanish.
Her Treatment Philosophy
Dr. Rima views prevention as the key to maintaining good oral health. Her priority is to save teeth or original tooth structure whenever possible. She educates her patients on how to prevent cavities and periodontal disease. When there are oral health issues that need to be treated, she considers the reasonable outcomes for any procedure. She asks herself a series of questions:
- Is this treatment going to be good for the patient?
- What is best for this patient right now, five to ten years from now, or for the rest of their life?
- What’s the prognosis if I do one treatment versus another?
“I lay it all on the table and give the patient options, telling them all the risks and benefits involved, as well as long-term outcomes. It can be difficult to make these choices, but my patients and I make the decisions together.”
Her favorite aspect of dentistry
“I absolutely love cosmetic dentistry. I love giving people a new smile! A patient can feel self-conscious about misalignment or other problems with their teeth. It changes their lives when their teeth are restored and their smile looks amazing. I love being able to help them so they can smile more and their inner light shines through.”
