At Optima Dental Portland, we offer our patients traditional titanium implants and zirconia dental implants (ceramic) or non-metal dental implants. All of our dental implant treatments are inclusive where surgery, final restoration and lab fabrication of teeth are completed by our team.
Dental implants can replace a single missing tooth, multiple teeth as well as an entire arch. Our dental implants services to replace a single tooth include tooth-in-a-day also known as immediate implant placement without flipper. Our full arch dental implants services include all-on-4, implant dentures and various options of implant-supported bridges.
Dental implants are certainly the best, most effective tooth and most natural tooth replacement option available in dentistry today. While there has been an advancement in the regeneration of natural teeth through stem cells, practical application of such technology is decades away. So dental implants are the most practical solution to replace teeth currently and for many years to come.
Dental implant consists of three parts:
1. Implant Body: The titanium post that is inserted into your jawbone.
2. Abutment: This device connects the crown to the implant body.
3. Crown: The final restoration is a crown that is placed on the abutment, which looks and performs like a natural, beautiful tooth.
The dental implant process consists of three steps. It starts with evaluation followed by surgery and it ends with the restoration.
Step One: Evaluation – The first visit
The evaluation begins by examination of bone and tissue quality and quantity at the implant site as well as the condition of adjacent teeth. 3D CT scan imaging is requred for adequate evaluation and diagnosis. The CT scan is also used for implant surgery planning and precise implant placement.
The assessment of overall health and medications is part of the inital evaluation to rule out contraindications for dental implant surgery. The evaluation is usually performed at your initial consulation visit.
Step Two: Surgery – The second visit
After adequate anesthesia, the implant surgery begins with post insertions into the jawbone through a short and gentle drilling sequence that corresponds to implant size. This process takes no longer than 10-15 minutes, and is typically completed while under local anesthesia. For patients with dental anxiety, various sedation options are presented to help make the experience more comfortable.
In some cases with little to no bleeding with flapless surgery. Flapless implant surgery requires no incision. In such circumstances, you will experience minimal discomfort, little to no bleeding, and faster healing and recovery.
In the vast majority of situations, you can have your tooth removed and the dental placed along with a fixed crown mimicking natural tooth. Without the inconvenience of having to deal with removable temporary replacements like flippers or dentures. This process is often referred to as teeth-in-a day or same day dental implants. When possible, this is our most preferred approach as it offers several advantages which are discussed in further details in same day dental implants section.
Step Three: Final Restoration – The third and fourth visit
The final step in the process is the fabrication and placement of the final restoration which includes the abutment and the crown. This process often two separate visits. In the case where multiple teeth are missing, the final restoration may include, a bridge, all-on-4 or implant supported dentures. The process of restoring dental implants can take place 4-6 months after initial implant surgery. This period of time is required to allow the bone to adhere to the implant through a process called implant osseointegration. Osseointegration is the process where the implant and jaw bone form a strong permanent bond.
What can dental implants be used for?
Dental implants can be used to replace single or multiple missing teeth. They can be used with implant dentures by providing great support and retention. The can also be used for all on 4, where they can provide fixed full arch replacement supported by 4 implants.
Are dental implants painful?
The vast majority of patients report that healing from dental implant surgery is easier than healing from tooth removal. This is consistent with scientific research that reports little discomfort after dental implant surgery.
In cases of immediate implant placement is placed at the time of tooth removal, less inflammation and soreness is expected. Most patients require minimal pain management through medication, often no longer than few days.
How much do implants cost?
The average cost of dental implants in Portland, Oregon a is between $1000 -$2200 depending on the type of implant required. The cost of the implant restoration which includes the abutment and crown is approximately $2500. So under normal circumstances, the estimated total cost is $3500 to $4700 for implant placement and final restoration. With that in mind, shopping around for the lowest cost dental implant can easily be a big mistake. It can potentially lead to surgical complications and poor outcome as lower cost implants are often manufactured by lower grade titanium and often offered by less experienced surgeons. Once the implant is integrated into your jawbone, it will likely stay there for a lifetime. Having the right dental implant performed by highly trained and experienced doctor will undoubtedly save you time and lots of money in the long run.
With that in mind, our fees fall slightly below the average of dental implant cost in the Portland metro area. It is important to note that we utilize Nobel Biocare authentic implants which are among the highest quality implants made in the United States.
