Foods That Help Improve Your Oral Health
October 10, 2020 2:50 am |It is wise to make food choices depending on what is healthy for your body. This includes making dietary choices that are healthy for your teeth and gums. Just like how there are certain foods that are particularly good for your heart health, there are foods that can improve your oral health.
Calcium-Rich Foods
Foods like almonds, milk, yogurt, and cheese contain calcium, which promotes strong teeth and bones. Dairy products also contain a protein called casein, which helps protects tooth enamel.
Leafy Greens
Leafy greens just look healthy, don’t they? These include foods like kale, collard greens, spinach, cabbage, romaine lettuce, arugula, bok choy, and turnip greens. Relating to your oral health specifically, leafy greens contain calcium and vitamins that help strengthen teeth. On top of their nutritious components, leafy greens require more chewing on your part and that action helps prompt saliva production, which in turn cleans your teeth.
Fish
Fish, and oily fish in particular, is another food that’s great for dental health. Salmon, lake trout, sardines, and albacore tuna contain vitamin D, which supports healthy bones and can help reduce tooth decay.
Cacao
Cacao nibs are full of antioxidants, as well as polyphenols, which can help fight cavity-causing bacteria. Keep in mind that most chocolate bars are high in sugar and therefore not the best for your oral health. Stick with dark chocolate with at least 70% cacao.
