I’m on vacation and my dental filling fell out. Can I just put some of that filling material you can get in a store in it? The cavity is gone. It just needs filling. Carl Dear Carl, a woman and her dentist Why is it that things like this always happen at the most inopportune times? It’s such an aggravation. As to whether or not you can use the store bought filling material depends on how much longer you are going to be on vacation. This material is designed as a temporary stop-gap. It’s not recommended for more than a few days. If you are going home in a few days, you should be fine. Any longer than that and you risk serious problems. There’s a reason your filling fell out and you need to find out why. It could be you developed decay underneath. If you just put filling material over that, the decay will continue to spread underneath.

There are Emergency Dentists

If you’ll be gone a while, I recommend doing an internet search for an “emergency dentist”. These are dentists who will see non-established patients in cases like yours when they have a dental emergency. They usually make room in their schedule in case things like this pop-up and will see you that day. They’ll do x-rays to determine whether or not there is further decay. If there is, they can remove it and replace the filling permanently. Hopefully, it hasn’t developed into a full-blown infection, but if it does a root canal treatment can be done and you can return to enjoying your vacation. If you’re someone who struggles with dental fear, there are emergency dentists who use dental sedation. Ask when you call so they can be prepared, but they’ll need to do a consultation to go over your medical history and any medications you’re on. I hope this helps.
